The Backfire Awards

For outstanding achievement in unintended consequences.

The best fixes often cause the next problem. Leaded gasoline made engines run better and put lead in children's blood. We collect backfires like it, score them and argue about them, so the next big fix gets a second look.

The Midgley

Thomas Midgley Jr. invented leaded gasoline and Freon. Both solved real problems, and the world spent decades cleaning up after them.

For backfires at world scale.

Anyone can nominate one. Judges give it an Oops Score, readers give it a Herd Score, and the winners are named each year.

The Murphy

Murphy's law: anything that can go wrong will go wrong. Drop your toast and it lands butter side down.

For everyday backfires.

The small fix at home, at work or online that made things worse. Tell us yours. The best get featured.

The serious question behind the joke

What will win a Midgley thirty years from now?

Better to try and fail than never try. Mostly. Mark a nominee Prospective to name a decision being made today, in transportation, housing, energy, AI or city-building, before it wins.

The gender gap

Most nominees are men

We estimate women make up only 2 to 5 percent of people who qualify for a Midgley. For most of history, women were kept out of the places where these backfires start: industrial labs, scientific academies, and high-level military and economic planning. Women who did hold power, such as queens and empresses, mostly made local political or military mistakes, not world-scale technical ones.

We want a future where women have every opportunity to win a Midgley. Some say that future would have fewer backfires. We would like to find out. Meet Lizzie Magie.

Single-use zoning (New York's 1916 Zoning Resolution) Once separating uses became the default everywhere, homes, jobs and shops ended up miles apart. The result was car dependence, sprawl, exclusionary single-family districts and a housing shortage that is now hard to legislate away. Mixed-use neighborhoods became illegal to build.

The Landlord's Game (which became Monopoly) In 1935 Parker Brothers sold a version as Monopoly, where you win by bankrupting everyone else. It became one of the best-selling board games of all time, and it taught the opposite lesson.
